About this treatment

Fire cupping is one of the most distinctive and powerful therapies in Traditional Chinese Medicine, with roots stretching back thousands of years across Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Egyptian healing traditions. At Shujuan Chinese Clinic, we use traditional glass fire cupping — a technique where a flame is briefly introduced into a glass cup to create a vacuum before it is swiftly placed on the skin. The suction created by the cup lifts the skin and superficial muscle layer upward, drawing fresh oxygenated blood into the area, releasing deep-seated muscle tension, and stimulating the body's natural healing response. This is the opposite action to conventional massage, which compresses the tissue — cupping decompresses it, separating the layers and allowing stagnant blood, metabolic waste, and blocked Qi to be cleared. Cupping is particularly effective for chronic pain, tight muscles, respiratory congestion, and conditions where poor circulation or stagnation is a contributing factor. The characteristic circular marks left on the skin are not bruises — they are a sign of the body drawing stagnation to the surface, and they typically fade within 3–7 days.

What to expect

Shujuan will begin by assessing the areas of tension or concern and selecting the most appropriate cupping points. A flame is briefly placed inside a glass cup to create a vacuum — this takes only a moment — and the cup is then swiftly and smoothly applied to the skin. The gentle suction lifts the tissue upward. Most clients describe a warm, pulling sensation that quickly becomes deeply relaxing — quite different from the pressure of a conventional massage. Cups are typically left in place for 5–15 minutes, or may be moved slowly across the skin (sliding cupping) to cover a broader area. Circular marks may appear on the skin after treatment. These are not bruises — they are caused by the suction drawing stagnant blood and metabolic waste to the surface, and are a sign the treatment is working. They are painless and typically fade within 3–7 days. You will be advised to keep the treated areas warm and avoid cold water or draughts for a few hours after treatment.
